Time Out for Non-Relevant Information
Sometimes we call it “trivia”, but trivia in one context is news or history in another.
Therefore, we present (drumroll): Unsinkable Sam
We’re not sure whether this tuxedo cat was a hero or just buoyant and good at dodging shrapnel. In May 1941, The HMS Cossack sunk the German Bismark after a 3-day battle. A British sailor hadn’t lost his sense of humor in battle; he named the cat “Oscar”, naval code for “man overboard”. Five months later, a U-Boat sunk the Cossack. A The sailors renamed the cat “Unsinkable Sam”. Ships deposited the sailors and the cat upon a troop carrier. Just three weeks later, another U-Boat torpedoed the troop carrier. The sailors favored caution over their fondness for the cat and retired Unsinkable Sam, who became a land-bound mouser first on Gibraltar and then in Belfast.
