Deadly Storm in Beckley?

SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to storm damage emergencies often during the winter months. The winter season in Beckley is short but averages 52 inches of snow a year. In 1978 a massive blizzard hit West Virginia. This storm is considered to be the biggest blizzard to ever happen in West Virginia in recorded history.
“The Great Blizzard of ‘78” shut down the state for days. The blizzard was caused by a low-pressure system that developed near the Florida panhandle. On January 20, the system reached West Virginia. The National Weather Service believed the snow would mix with sleet and rain, but the temperature never exceeded freezing temperatures, and the snow kept falling. That day 24 inches of snow was recorded in Charleston.
The blizzard caused roofs to collapse and stranded people, and many roads, schools, and businesses were closed for days. On January 26, a big rainstorm caused the snow to melt, and many areas flooded. Although there was flooding, snow remained on the ground for sixty days – the longest period of continuous snow coverage in West Virginia.
